One of the biggest global lifestyle trends is towards vegetarianism, where people don’t eat meat, fish or chicken, or veganism, which totally excludes any use of animal-based ingredients. This lifestyle choice extends not only to diet but to all products, which includes clothing and personal products.

When it comes to beauty – make-up and skin-care products – brands with foresight are turning towards reduced use of animal-sourced ingredients, but very few ranges are entirely vegan.

African Extracts Rooibos skin care is one of the most widely available, affordable brands in South Africa that is endorsed by Beauty Without Cruelty. This means that our products and their ingredients are not tested on animals.

Many multi-national brands, including some of the biggest names based in Europe or the United States, are facing increasing pressure from consumers around the question of animal testing. Many state on their websites that they do not test their products on animals, except where specific countries’ legislation requires this.

One of these countries is China, a growing lucrative market for Western beauty brands. At the moment, all skin-care products that are imported into China are required to undergo Chinese animal testing, which usually results in the death of the animals used. For many women, this isn’t in line with their personal values and that’s why they choose to use products from BWC’s Humane Guide.

Now an increasing number of vegan consumers are saying that they would also prefer not to have animal ingredients in their products at all. At African Extracts, we have made great strides along the road towards 100% animal-free formulations. We are also responding to inquiries from our customers by indicating next to each product on our website which products are vegan (most of them are). Look out for the universal V for vegetarian/vegan next to each product description.

Going forward, as we order new packaging, we will also be indicating vegan status on each product. Our vegan6ultimate aim is to produce skin care that’s as good for your conscience as it is to your skin.
